of the University.

We have accordingly been surprised

to find the University as a whole, and the Faculty of

Engineering in particular, bulking so largely in the

Government Report.

We deal separately below with the following aspects

of the Government Report:-

(A) Criticisms of the internal working of the

Faculty of Engineering.

(B) Criticisms of the value of our Engineering

Graduates.

(C) The University's relations with Local Industry.

(D) The University's relationship with Technical

Education in the Colony.

Workshop Courses (G.R. Paras. 4 to 8).

On investigation we find the workshop exercises to

be very good, well graded, and suited to the capacities

of the students, giving very considerable variety of

interesting manual work and experience of both hand and

machine tools. We agree with the Government Report

(Para. 8) that fuller records of workshop practice might

with advantage be kept. We recommend that marks be

awarded to each student for each job done, and that such

marks be preserved for reference in a special register.

In saying this however we do not forget that with

the rapid increase in numbers now being experienced in

the Engineering Faculty, the closer supervision and more

individual attention which this implies may be impractic-

able without some increase of workshop staff.
